Bob's Vision For Scottsdale

  • Open and responsive government – Fewer executive sessions, written performance reviews for Charter Officers that are open to the public, keeping the City Auditor independent of political influences in order to protect the public's right to know when things are wrong in City government and more open decision making on all issues.
  • Fiscal responsibility – To keep Scottsdale a great place to live and to be ready to face the challenges of the future we need a sound city treasury. We can accomplish this through setting responsible budget targets in advance of budget development, true zero-based budgeting, no taxpayer dollars thrown away on corporate welfare or subsidies to favored special interests, and appointing an independent City Treasurer as the watchdog for taxpayer dollars.
  • Top-notch basic city services: The number one job of City government is to provide basic city services such as public safety, water, sewer, garbage collection, infrastructure, and code enforcement. The next priority is to provide amenities such as parks and recreation and public art. Doing these well requires not only a sound city treasury to fund them, but a commitment to treat these as high priorities, not just as afterthoughts. In my six years on Council I have voted 100% to support increased funding to put more police officers and firefighters on Scottsdale streets and for new parks and recreation facilities.
  • Realistic traffic improvements – Implement a transportation plan that makes it easier for the vast majority of Scottsdale residents to commute in the way they want (in their cars) rather than trying to force residents into expensive and ineffective boondoggles such as light rail. Use trolleys and buses judiciously where required for those residents who cannot drive.
  • McDowell-Sonoran Preserve: In my six years on Council I have voted 100% to support and complete the Preserve because it is a beautiful amenity for Scottsdale residents. In addition, preserving 1/3 of our city from development serves to save money by lessening the demand for city infrastructure and services. But this benefit disappears if we cram the people who would have lived in the Preserve area into other areas of the city by increasing density.
  • Tourism - This is the gem that truly distinguishes Scottsdale from our neighbors. Tax dollars from tourism enrich Scottsdale’s city coffers, and the amenities that we create to attract visitors also increase the quality of life of those of us who live here year-round. Supporting tourism is one reason that I oppose changing Scottsdale’s special character to make it just another dense, urban environment – people travel to Scottsdale to get away from that, not to see more of it.
  • Protect and renew Scottsdale’s infrastructure – In the older areas of our city we must insure that we devote sufficient funds and attention to our infrastructure. This infrastructure is facing the twin threats of reaching the end of its service life and the extra demands of the crowding caused by the increases in height and density the city has already allowed in this area.
  • Improve code enforcement – More and better-trained code inspectors. No more turning a blind eye to powerful developers who blight properties in order to create political pressure for big up-zonings, variances and/or subsidies.
